iMessage vs SMS: what changes for Android customers

The short version

Your iPhone customers get iMessage: blue bubbles, the way they text their friends. Your Android customers get SMS from a registered US number. The assistant, the questions, the codes and every consent rule are the same on both. What changes is the channel, and a little bit of setup that we do for you.

What iPhone customers see

A blue bubble from your brand, in the same Messages app they use every day. The conversation reads like a chat, not a campaign. Replies come back in the same thread, and your team sees them in your dashboard next to the order.

iMessage doesn’t need US carrier registration, so it can go live as soon as your brand profile and flows are approved.

What Android customers see

A normal text message in their messaging app. It comes from a US number registered for your brand, so carriers know who is sending and why.

The words are the same. A typical opener looks like this on either phone:

  • hey Sam, it’s Mia, Venom Scents’ text assistant. saw the 3-pack in your cart. anything i can help with?

A few things are different on SMS:

  • Plain text only. No blue bubble and no rich link previews. Links show as text, which is one more reason they only come after a reply.
  • Shorter is better. Long texts can arrive split into parts on some phones, so the assistant keeps each message short and asks one question at a time.
  • Registration first. SMS from a business number needs US carrier registration before it can send. We file it for you.

Carrier registration, handled

To send SMS in the US, a brand has to register who it is and what it texts about. That covers your business details, the kinds of messages you send and how customers opt in.

We prepare and file it for you during setup. You review the details, and we keep you posted on the status. If you’d rather not wait, you can go live on iMessage first and add SMS once the registration is approved. Android customers simply aren’t texted until then.

iMessage can start right away. SMS starts when the registration is approved. Nobody gets a half-finished setup.

The rules don’t change by channel

Whatever the phone, the same checks run before every message:

  • Consent first. No recorded opt-in, no text.
  • Quiet hours. Only between 8 AM and 9 PM in the customer’s timezone.
  • Opt-outs end it. STOP or any opt-out wording in their own words gets one confirmation, then silence.
  • Honest assistant. It says it’s your brand’s assistant and never pretends to be a person.
  • No link in the first text. Codes and links come after the customer writes back.

What to expect in your numbers

Reply behavior can differ a little between iPhone and Android audiences, and your mix depends on your customers. Your dashboard shows each conversation’s channel, so you can see how both are doing without exporting anything.
